Mắt đở được chút nào chưa? Ráng take care nghen! Tui thường vô tiết mục Nhạc Ngoại Quốc này để nghe nhạc ngoại quốc mà các bạn trong nhóm sưu tầm. Nghe đã quá! Để "có qua có lại", tui xin đóng góp một sưu tầm riêng của tui: đó là nhạc Nhật của "Teresa Teng" một nữ ca sĩ Đài Loan từ khoảng đầu thập niên 1980's. Chuyện là một hôm khoảng năm 1983, tui có dịp từ Melbourne đi công tác ở Jakarta (Indonesia). Buổi chiều sau giờ làm việc, tui đi dạo phố Jakarta, tình cờ thấy một quán bán nhạc đang chơi một bản nhạc tiếng Nhật do một nữ ca sĩ ca với một giọng hát cực kỳ hấp dẫn! Tui tò mò vô hỏi mua, thời đó chưa có CD, chỉ có băng cassette thôi. Coi tựa thấy đề là "Terese Teng", tên Tàu mà lại ca nhạc Nhật! Nhiều năm về sau, tìm hiểu thêm thì mới biết cô này mặc dù là gốc Đài Loan nhưng ca rất nhiều thứ tiếng mà trình diễn ở nhiều nước cho cộng động người Hoa trên toàn thế giới, kể cả Việt Nam (trước 75, ở Chợ Lớn!). Nhưng nỗi tiếng nhất lại là ở Nhật! Teresa Teng có giọng ca cực kỳ ngọt ngào, trong trẽo. Người Á châu khắp thế giới đều hâm mộ cô ca sĩ này. Nhưng chẳng may, hồng nhan bạc phận! Teresa mất lúc còn trẻ, lúc mới vừa 42 tuổi! Tui nói không ngoa, nhưng có lẽ tui nghe băng nhạc Teresa này từ mấy mươi năm nay có lẽ trên mấy trăm lần rồi mà vẫn không bao giờ chán! (Có khi tui nghe liên tục băng này cả chục lần trong một ngày!). Tui đã chuyển từ cassette qua mp3 rồi. Chúng tôi muốn nhắc đến bộ phim nầy như để thay lời tạ lỗi với thầy cô, để thấy được sự nhọc nhằn, khổ tâm của thầy cô chúng ta, và cùng nhau được sống lại với quá khứ , cũng như soi rọi vào ngõ ngách sâu kín nào đó trong tâm hồn trẻ thơ chúng ta những phút giây nông nổi , có thể ở mức độ khác nhau so với thế giới trong lớp học của To Sir, With Love, nhưng bản chất chỉ là một. Nội dung phim Mở đầu phim, trên chuyến xe buýt hai tầng màu đỏ từ trung tâm thành phố Luân Đôn chạy về phía Tây, đưa Mark Thackeray ( Sidney Poitier ) đến nhận nhiệm sở ở trường Trung học North Quay, Bến cảng Luân Đôn. Thackeray là một thanh niên da đen học thức, tốt nghiệp ngành kỹ sư điện tử, có nhiều ước vọng, nhưng hiện sống trong tình trạng thất nghiệp. Trong khi chờ đợi công việc chuyên môn, anh bất đắc dĩ nhận lời làm giáo viên tại trường nầy. Mặc dù chưa có kinh nghiệm giảng dạy, nhưng anh đã được giao phụ trách một lớp cuối cấp, toàn những học sinh vô kỷ luật. Lớp học nầy là một hiện tượng, nói đúng là nỗi kinh hoàng của tất cả giáo viên và Ban Giám hiệu nhà trường. Trước Thackeray, một giáo viên đã phải bỏ cuộc, xin thuyên chuyển đến một trường khác, vì không thể chịu đựng nổi những trò quậy phá kinh hồn của lũ quỷ nầy. Lớp học được giao cho thầy Thackeray gồm toàn những thiếu niên ngỗ nghịch và phần lớn xuất thân từ những gia đình có hoàn cảnh khó khăn, cha mẹ ly tán, hoặc nếu có em nào co gia đình khá giả, thì rơi vào tình trạng bất mãn với cha mẹ, thiếu hẳn sự quan tâm và yêu thương của phụ huynh. Đám học sinh nầy coi lớp học như một nơi lý tưởng để bộc lộ bản thân mình, chúng trở nên xấu xa và đối xử thô bạo với tất cả những người chung quanh không chút kiêng dè thương tiếc; hoặc muốn chứng tỏ với mọi người rằng bọn chúng đã trưởng thành thực thụ mà không cần đến sự hướng dẫn chỉ bảo của ai. Khi Thackeray chấp nhận đến dạy, anh thừa hiểu rằng mình phải chuẩn bị đối đầu với những thử thách mà anh chưa từng nếm trải. Luật lệ nhà trường không cho phép dùng hình phạt vũ lực đối với học sinh. Anh tự nhủ với lòng sẽ phải kiên nhẫn và hết sức bình tĩnh, làm ngơ trước những lời lẽ xúc phạm, những hành vi xấc láo ngang ngược của chúng và bắt đầu lên kế hoạch riêng để lập lại kỷ cương cho lớp học. Anh bắt đầu dính líu vào cuộc sống cá nhân của học sinh và phải né tránh những bước chủ động của cô học trò có cảm tình với mình. Nhưng cũng như những giáo viên trước đây, Thackeray càng nhẫn nhục bao nhiêu thì chúng được nước, càng bày ra những trò đùa quái ác bấy nhiêu. Cho đến một ngày , chúng đã vượt quá giới hạn chịu đựng của Thackeray. Trong cơn giận dữ bộc phát, Thackeray chợt nhận ra những đứa trẻ này không hề hứng thú với việc học, hứng thú với những bài giảng trong sách giáo khoa thông thường. Đồng thời anh cũng biết rằng sau khi tốt nghiệp ở trường nầy ra, không mấy đứa sẽ tiếp tục theo học cao hơn, điều quan tâm nhất của chúng là làm sao kiếm được việc làm. Vì vậy Thackeray quyết định chinh phục chúng và chuẩn bị cho chúng hành trang vào đời. Việc này được Thackeray thực hiện bằng những hành động thiết thực: Anh đưa chúng đi thăm viện bảo tàng mỹ thuật cổ điển, dạy nấu ăn, dạy trang điểm cho các nữ sinh, giải đáp rõ ràng và hợp tình, hợp lý tất cả các câu hỏi hóc búa, tham chí nhận lời so găng với lũ học trò ngang bướng. Anh dạy cho chúng cách ăn mặc, đi đứng, cách nói năng xưng hô lễ độ và lịch thiệp. Sự thù địch ban đầu dần dà được thay thế bằng sự cảm phục và kính trọng. Trong mắt chúng giờ đây anh không chỉ đơn thuần là một thầy giáo, mà còn là người cha tinh thần giáo dục chúng những điều hay lẽ phải, bằng những bài giảng thực tế của đời sống, chứ không phải lý thuyết. Thackeray đã thực sự chế ngự được đám học trò ngang bướng của mình. Một trong những trường đoạn hay nhất của phim , khi lớp học tổ chức quyên tiền để mua vòng hoa tang gửi đến viếng mẹ của một người bạn da màu trong lớp. Thầy Thackeray bàng hoàng khi nghe từ học trò của mình nói lên những e ngại mà chúng đã bị nhồi nhét từ những thành kiến trong xã hội. Rồi sau đó cũng chính anh đã sững người khi nhìn thấy những đứa học trò trẻ dại của mình có mặt đầy đủ trong đám tang của người mẹ đó. Phương pháp giảng dạy của Thackeray đã làm hội đồng giáo viên rất kính nể, ban Giám hiệu phải chính thức mời anh ở lại trường giảng dạy. Trong thời gian đó, song song với công việc giảng dạy, Thackeray đã tiếp tục nộp đơn xin việc tới rất nhiều nơi, dù không mấy hy vọng. Cuối cùng một trong những công ty xây dựng hàng đầu đã đề nghị anh về cộng tác với họ. Và trong buổi tiệc chia tay, Babbs ( ca sĩ Lulu ) đã tự nguyện hát lên ca khúc To Sir,With Love. Không khí tràn đầy cảm xúc, càng làm cho thầy Thackeray lúng túng trước câu hỏi được đặt ra, đó là anh sẽ đến nhận công việc mới phù hợp với chuyên môn ở một công ty xây dựng hay tiếp tục việc dạy học ....... Những đóng góp khác Góp phần thành công cho bộ phim To Sir,With Love còn phải kể đến sự xuất sắc của dàn diễn viên trẻ vào vai những học sinh ngỗ nghịch quậy phá. Những diễn viên có thể nói là vô danh trước đó như Lulu, Suzy Kendall, Judy Gesson…, sau phim được công chiếu đã trở thành những ngôi sao sáng của tương lai.
